Prof. Dr. Ralf Bartenschlager
Welcome to the Department of Infectious Diseases, Molecular Virology
The Research of the Unit Molecular Virology centers around the molecular and cell biology of hepatitis viruses (HCV & HBV) and flaviviruses, such as Dengue virus and Zika virus. Apart from understanding the complex relationship between virus and its host, we also study how these viruses activate and counteract innate antiviral defences. Belonging to the medical faculty and the faculty of biosciences, the Research Unit Molecular Virology participates in training and education of medical and life science students in the field of infectious diseases, virology and cell biology by giving lectures, seminars and lab practicals and by coordinating the Major Infectious Diseases and the doctoral study program of the Center for Infectious Diseases in Heidelberg.
The creation of the Research Unit Molecular Virology has been made possible by the Chica and Heinz Schaller Foundation that provided the position of the department head for the first 10 years and a start-up grant to help setting up the necessary research infrastructure.
