The Research of the Unit Mol­e­c­u­lar Virol­o­gy cen­ters around the mol­e­c­u­lar and cell biol­o­gy of hepati­tis virus­es (HCV & HBV) and fla­vivirus­es, such as Dengue virus and Zika virus. Apart from under­stand­ing the com­plex rela­tion­ship between virus and its host, we also study how these virus­es acti­vate and coun­ter­act innate antivi­ral defences. Belong­ing to the med­ical fac­ul­ty and the fac­ul­ty of bio­sciences, the Research Unit Mol­e­c­u­lar Virol­o­gy par­tic­i­pates in train­ing and edu­ca­tion of med­ical and life sci­ence stu­dents in the field of infec­tious dis­eases, virol­o­gy and cell biol­o­gy by giv­ing lec­tures, sem­i­nars and lab prac­ti­cals and by coor­di­nat­ing the Major Infec­tious Dis­eases and the doc­tor­al study pro­gram of the Cen­ter for Infec­tious Dis­eases in Heidelberg.

The cre­ation of the Research Unit Mol­e­c­u­lar Virol­o­gy has been made pos­si­ble by the Chi­ca and Heinz Schaller Foun­da­tion that pro­vid­ed the posi­tion of the depart­ment head for the first 10 years and a start-up grant to help set­ting up the nec­es­sary research infrastructure.
